About
The undergraduate degree is a design-based modular programme offering a broad and thorough introduction to the study of architecture. It is a suitable springboard for a professional career in architecture or other career pathways.
The framework of the graduate programme is designed to engage the student in current debates on the context and purpose of architecture in preparation for the changing nature of architectural practice.
Both undergraduate and graduate courses are offered in a full- and part-time mode with the possibility of change between the courses.
An emphasis on competitions has produced an impressive track record of wins over the past decade. High calibre practitioners and visiting academics complement in-house teaching. The School is particularly strong on computer-aided design and houses a commercial CAD centre.
An extensive overseas exchange programme has been running for several years and is considered an integral part of academic life. Students are encourages to spend a period of study at one or more exchange institutions in Europe, Scandinavia, North America, Australia and the Far East (including China). SOCRATES funded programmes are in place.
The School has two research units: Centre for Conservation Studies; and Developing World Built Environment Research Group, and is closely associated with the internationally respected Institute of Energy & Sustainable Development (IESD).
The major research areas are complementary to several of the teaching strengths in the School – environmental design, computing, architectural history, theory and criticism, clients and users in design education (CUDE), post-occupancy evaluation of buildings, conservation, developing world issues and Hindu temple design.
