About
The study of architecture is focussed on design projects with integrated programmes exploring historical, theoretical, social, professional and technological contexts of design. Assessment is through design projects, assignments and written papers. There are no conventional end-of-year examinations.
The aims of the first two years of the course are to release creative potential, explore design processes, lay a foundation of cultural and technical knowledge and promote the acquisition of communication and other skills necessary for a designer.
Third-year students and postgraduate (BArch) students choose from the study programmes offered by the School’s Design and Research Groups. Students can choose to experience each of the groups during three years of study or they can choose to specialise. They carry out exploratory projects, an independent study and a major design project that integrates theoretical and technical studies. The distinctive qualities of these programmes embody the School’s commitment to diversity and student choice. You can see the current work of the Design & Research Groups on the School’s website.
Underpinning all our teaching are commitments to creating a sustainable environment that is accessible to all and to developing in our graduates the study and employment skills which equip them to take advantage of all future opportunities.
The School has established partnerships with Schools in Germany, Belgium, Italy and Spain for the regular exchange of staff and students. Strong connections and exchanges with South East Asia and Australia reinforce the School’s global view of the varied contexts of design in the built environment.
Study is supported by excellent workshop facilities, a learning resources unit and computer workstations equipped with the latest software for design and presentation.
The School offers continuing support to graduates through its short courses in Professional Development and its Masters courses in Architecture, Project Management, Facilities Management and Inter-disciplinary Design. Research is focussed on Housing, Sustainability, Urban Development and Art & Design.
