About
The Canterbury School of Architecture provides a stimulating and motivating education that draws on the transdisciplinary nature of the subject and the interdisciplinary nature of the school’s location within an art and design institution; through our relationships with the department of Fine Art we approach architectural education and practice in a particular way. We focus on the dialogical and interwoven relationships between making and thinking, and interrogate the epistemologies incorporated in various media and cognate disciplines and their techniques and operations in order to understand the many perspectives inherent in spatial design. Our programs incorporate real-time transformations of space as part of the design process, complementing the propositional nature of spatial design with actual 'doing'.
Our courses are structured so as to support the holistic and integrated nature of architectural practice, as well as to support a culture of engagement and debate in contemporary architecture issues. The school enjoys a varied and regular stream of visiting lecturers and guest critics, and dialogue with local, regional, national and international partners expands our critical discourse. Whilst we are particularly interested in using our geographical area as a laboratory – a topography for change – we also provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in international workshops, events, and competitions.
