About
The Department of Architecture is charged with addressing multiple demands which arise from the fact that it is a professionally accredited program offering graduate and undergraduate degrees within an arts and design – rather than technically or research-driven – institution. It is its goal to empower its students in the exercise of their creativity and ingenuity by equipping them for the service-based and market-driven economy of architecture while maintaining their faith in their role as cultural producers.
Deeply rooted in the creative process, the way architecture is taught at RISD understands the practice of making as thoughtful expression: ideas and thoughts are expressed through actual production, not only discursively. The Department encourages the capacity for critique, inherent in the way things are made and reflected, and embedded in all decisions endemic to the creative process. The production of architecture engenders and is engendered by a social, political, material, technological and cultural agenda.
