About RIBA Examination in Architecture for Office-Based Candidates
Location: Department of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University.

The RIBA Office-based Examination exists to provide an alternative work-based route to qualification at Part 1 and Part 2. Established in 1988 by the RIBA and, since 2002, managed by the Department of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, the Examination is designed to meet the learning and qualification needs of individuals who are employed full-time in architectural practice and who want to become registered architects.

Whilst remaining in full-time employment, within an architect’s practice, a required element of taking the Examination, candidates work together with both a ‘mentor’ (from within their office) and a personal tutor (who must be outside the office) to prepare for the Examination. The continuing mentored practice work, and the development of a personal portfolio, which the candidate develops with the support of a tutor, forms the basis for individual design development. In addition to this, candidates prepare for assessment by a combination of formal written examinations, coursework and design projects, producing a portfolio that has to meet the same Part 1 or Part 2 standards as students of architecture. Candidates attend Oxford Brookes University for a maximum of eight days per year, either when presenting design projects for assessment or for induction/study sessions.

Each year the RIBA celebrates the candidates’ achievements with the award of the RIBA Certificate in Architecture (the Part 1) and the RIBA Diploma in Architecture (the Part 2) at an awards ceremony in London.
