About
The School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield is committed to developing innovative design within a strong social context. Project work is underpinned by the school's exceptional research base, including a very strong environmental axis. Students are encouraged to speculate on future conditions (spatial, environmental, social) in an authoritative manner. The best work has a sharp edge to it that treads the line between the visionary and the believable. Recently work has been focussed on the immediate region, with the School becoming increasingly involved in live projects and proposals for local regeneration. The aim has been to get architectural education out of its ivory tower and into a real engagement with the community, bringing the energy, research, resources and visions of the School to bear in a meaningful manner.
Our teaching and learning methods are aimed at developing the self-reliance, critical awareness, confidence and creativity of all students. We have pioneered a series of innovative methods including the student-led review, live project and communication workshops.
Our research record is the best of any UK School over the past ten years, and we have one of the largest postgraduate programmes in the country. Our research focuses on the way that the design of the built environment contributes to quality of life and is conducted within three interdisciplinary programmes: Methods & Representations, Users and Uses, Sustainability and Design.
