As the building envelope ceases to be the boundary of spaces, there should be new understandings of the life that was once sheltered within.

The nervous system, which stands for the tangible living infrastructure and circulations and invisible energy distributions, is therefore exposed and open for interaction to the users. As Ant Farm, Coop Himmelblau and Haus-Rucker.co have experimented during the sixties, the essence of transparent material lies on the union of sensations. The transparent EFTE facade of the new structure in Shantang, together with the installations, marks the total liberation of convention building forms and spatial relationship, and achieves what Pallasmaa called the fusion of eye, hand and mind. The urban nervous system is concurrently a liberation and celebration. It shoulders a broader meaning to liberate its inhabitants from the ever-eroding traditional building envelopes, to inform and educate the public about the rudiment of living and encourage their contemplation on the human-nature relationship, and to celebrate the diversity and convenience of contemporary life with the aid of modern building technology.
